Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a joint venture between NTPC and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), is on track to transform Jharkhand’s power sector. At its annual press conference in Patratu, PVUNL outlined major developments for the upcoming year, with the commissioning of its 2,400 MW Phase-1 project slated for 2025. The project will begin in January 2025 with three units of 800 MW each, bringing significant power generation to the region. With an investment of Rs. 18,000 crore for Phase-1 and a focus on affordable power, industrial growth, and community welfare, PVUNL is set to become a key player in India’s power sector transformation.
85% of the Power will be Given to Jharkhand
85% of the generated power will be allocated to Jharkhand under an MoU with NTPC, ensuring affordable and reliable electricity for the state. In addition to Phase-1, PVUNL is preparing for Phase-2, which will add 1,600 MW, strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure further. The project will source coal from CCL and BCCL, with the Banhardi coal block in Latehar district expected to start operations in 18 months.
PVUNL aims to bridge the gap between Jharkhand’s installed capacity and actual power availability, which currently stands at 5,990 MW, with only 3,008 MW being received. By 2025, the Phase-1 project will help reduce dependence on costly private power sources, boosting industrial growth in the region.
CSR and Community Development
PVUNL is also dedicated to community development, having spent Rs. 17 crore on health, education, skill development, and infrastructure over the past five years. An additional Rs. 30 Crores is allocated for future CSR initiatives.
