Ranchi: Sunil Singh, an accused in the mining scam, surrendered before the special court of the CBI on today, in the court of Judge P.K. Sharma. The court granted him conditional bail. Sunil Singh, currently the General Manager at JSW Company, was employed in the Usha Martin Company, when the case was filed against him. He is accused of involvement in corruption related to the mining allocation to Usha Martin in 2005.
In 2005, Usha Martin was allotted an iron ore mine in Ghatkuri, located in West Singhbhum district. It is alleged that corruption took place during this allocation. Other accused in the case, including IAS officers Arun Kumar Singh and Indradev Paswan, had also been granted relief by the court after surrendering recently.
According to the CBI, Sunil Singh had a role in this scam. The CBI’s Delhi unit filed an FIR in 2016 (220/2016) under the provisions of criminal conspiracy, fraud, and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The FIR named the promoters of Usha Martin and mining department officials as the accused.
The FIR states that the recommendation sent to the Central Government for the mine allocation was biased in favor of Usha Martin by State Government officials. The company allegedly promised to use the iron ore in its steel plant located in Hat Gamharia. The company also gave an undertaking to the State Government. However, the CBI has alleged that the company later reneged on this promise, stating that there was no specific mention of it in the Cabinet note.
