Ranchi: The promotion process from Chief General Manager (CGM) to Executive Director (ED) at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has run into a roadblock as the Government nominated positions on the company’s Board currently vacant. The delay has raised concerns among senior officers awaiting promotion, particularly those who are approaching retirement and may lose eligibility if the process is not completed in time.
Retirement Deadline Adds to Officers’ Concerns
Under the existing eligibility criteria, a CGM must have completed three years in the post and have at least two years of service remaining to be considered for promotion to ED. With the process taking longer, several officers are moving closer to the two year retirement threshold. About 90 CGMs are reportedly in contention, while SAIL headquarters is planning to select around 18 to 20 officers.

The delay is linked to the absence of Government nominated members required during the ED promotion interviews. One of the posts fell vacant after IAS officer Ashish Chatterjee returned to his cadre in Tamil Nadu, while the other became vacant after Indian Revenue Service officer Abhijit Narendra retired on 30th September 2026. The promotion process is unlikely to move ahead until at least one of these positions is filled.
Sarita Chauhan’s Possible Appointment Draws Attention
SAIL headquarters is now closely watching the Steel Ministry’s decision on filling the vacant Board position. Sarita Chauhan, a 1999 batch IAS officer of the Union Territory cadre and currently posted as an Under Secretary in the Ministry of Steel, is being considered for appointment as a Government nominated member of the SAIL Board. Her possible appointment could pave the way for the stalled ED promotion process to resume.
