The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) non-executive employees’ union, BAKS, announced the first phase of its agitation over 45 long pending demands. As part of the programme, BSL employees will wear black badges or black bands while on duty on 21st and 22nd September 2026, followed by symbolic protests outside the offices of heads of major plant departments from 23rd September to 1st October 2026.
Protests to Be Held Outside Department Offices
The decision was taken at a meeting of BAKS members at Mazdoor Maidan in Bokaro. The union said employees across all shifts would participate in the protest. During the protests, the members will also raise some of the major pending demands of the employees. From 23rd September to 1st October 2026, demonstrations will be held outside the offices of department heads in key sections of Bokaro Steel Plant.

The BAKS said the 45 demands include changes in the bonus formula, implementation of labour laws and revision of the incentive formula. The union has already written to the SAIL chairman, Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Minister of State for Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, the steel and labour secretaries, Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises, the Union Labour and Employment Minister and the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), seeking action on the issues.
Union Accused Management of Keeping Demands Pending
The union has accused the SAIL corporate office and BSL management of keeping employees’ demands pending for a long time. BAKS said the agitation would be expanded if the issues were not resolved at the appropriate level. The union had also planned to announce the next phase of the agitation and the date of the indefinite hunger strike at its general meeting scheduled for 7th September 2026.

BAKS General Secretary Threatened Hunger Strike
The BAKS general secretary Hariom said repeated representations to the SAIL management and the concerned ministries had not resulted in the desired action. He said there was now little option but to intensify the agitation. Hariom also said he would personally sit on an indefinite hunger strike at the designated protest site before the ADM if the employees demands remained unresolved, and that the agitation would continue until the issues were settled.
