Senior 1995-batch Jharkhand-cadre IPS officer Sanjay Anandrao Lathkar has been appointed Director General (Security) in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on 15th September, marks a new phase in the career of the officer who has handled several sensitive policing and counter insurgency assignments.
Appointment Approved Until September 2028
According to the order, Lathkar will remain in the post from the date of assuming charge until his superannuation on 30th September 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. For his appointment, the post of Inspector General (Security), DAE, has been temporarily upgraded to Level-16 of the Pay Matrix. Lathkar was serving as Additional Director General (Security) in the department and is also associated with its Centralized Security Section and Crisis Management Group.

Long Experience in Counter Insurgency
Lathkar has spent a substantial part of his career in policing and counter-insurgency operations. During his tenure as IG, CRPF, Jharkhand Sector, he supervised operations in several Left Wing Extremism-affected areas. He later served as ADGP (Operations), Jharkhand Police, where he was involved in planning and coordination of counter-insurgency operations. His other assignments included SP, Latur; Additional Commissioner of Police, Pune City; DIG, Maharashtra ATS, DIG, CRPF in Gadchiroli and Nagpur; and IG, CRPF in Ranchi and Mumbai.

Community Outreach Was Part of Security Strategy
During his CRPF tenure in Jharkhand, Lathkar also supported efforts to improve communication between security personnel and local communities. CRPF personnel were trained in local languages and tribal customs, including Ho, Santhali, Nagpuri, Kurukh, Sadri and Bhojpuri. A 135-member women CRPF contingent was also deployed in the forested areas around Khunti for anti-Naxal operations. In 2019, while serving as IG, CRPF, Jharkhand Sector, Lathkar had appreciated the efforts of personnel who evacuated an injured woman Maoist and donated blood to help save her life.
