Key Highlights

New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday sanctioned more than Rs. 1,200 crore under the Prime Minister Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) for 10 states, with Jharkhand receiving Rs. 58 crore and Bihar Rs. 114 crore. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan handed over the financial sanction letters to the agriculture ministers of the states during a meeting in New Delhi. West Bengal received Rs. 290 crore, Haryana Rs. 198 crore and Chhattisgarh Rs. 181 crore.

Chouhan said the Centre would work with states through regular monthly virtual review meetings to track the progress of agricultural programmes. A State Agriculture Team will also be formed by bringing together agriculture ministers and secretaries, state agricultural universities, ICAR institutions, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, ATMA and Farmer Producer Organisations. District-level meetings will also be held every month to review implementation.
Focus on Soil Health and Pulses
With the Rabi season underway, the minister called for crop planning based on soil moisture and water availability. He also called for large-scale cultivation of pulses in rice-fallow areas of eastern India, particularly Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal. The Centre will run the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ from 22nd October to 30th November, with the campaign focusing on soil health, Soil Health Cards and balanced fertiliser use.
Minsiter Chouhan added that states should take legal action against fake fertilisers, spurious seeds and sub-standard pesticides. He also said the government would strengthen post-harvest management, scientific warehousing and marketing systems to improve returns to farmers. He announced that 100% government procurement of Tur, Urad and Masoor at MSP would be undertaken, with arrangements for payment within 48 hours, while international Free Trade Agreements would be used to expand overseas markets for Indian agricultural produce.
