Bokaro: A crucial meeting on the annual bonus of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) employees was scheduled for 1st October in New Delhi, with the management and NJCS leaders set to discuss and finalise the payout for 2026-27. The meeting will be chaired by SAIL Director (Personnel) K.K. Singh and will include representatives of INTUC, AITUC, CITU, BMS and HMS. The bonus is expected to be credited to employees’ bank accounts by 5th October, ahead of the festive season.

The 1st October 2026 meeting assumes importance as 2nd October 2026 is a national holiday for Gandhi Jayanti, followed by the weekend on 3rd and 4th October 2026. SAIL management has already started calculating the bonus under the existing formula agreed with NJCS. Based on the current formula, employees are expected to receive around Rs. 29,000 this year. About 52,000 permanent and trainee employees, including those at Bokaro Steel Plant and other SAIL units, are likely to benefit from the decision. Shardiya Navratri begins on 11th October 2026, while Dussehra falls on 20th October 2026.
Unions Demanded Higher Payout and Formula Review
While the management has worked out its proposed amount, the unions had not finalised their demand before the meeting. Union leaders said the company’s income and expenditure would be considered while putting forward their proposal. INTUC national president Dr G. Sanjeev Reddy said the unions would seek a revision of the existing bonus formula so that employees receive more than last year. In 2025, SAIL’s permanent employees received Rs. 29,500, while trainees were paid Rs. 23,600. The 1st October meeting will therefore determine whether this year’s payout remains close to the existing formula or moves higher following negotiations.
