Coal stocks at the country’s thermal power plants have come under pressure, with 45 of 148 major coal-based plants having less than five days of stock. The average stock across the plants stood at around seven days, according to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and Coal India Ltd (CIL) data cited in the report. The situation has led to instructions for higher coal supplies from Coal India’s Jharkhand-based subsidiaries to plants facing shortages.

Coal India has asked Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) and Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) to step up supplies to power plants where stocks have fallen sharply. Special railway rakes are being arranged for several plants. In Haryana, CCL is increasing supplies to Panipat, Mahatma Gandhi, Yamuna Nagar and Indira Gandhi STPP, while Rajiv Gandhi TPS is receiving coal from both CCL and BCCL. Supply to plants in Uttar Pradesh is also being strengthened through CCL and Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL).

Several plants in Bihar have low stocks, including Buxar TPP and Nabinagar units. CCL has been asked to ensure supplies to these plants. Within Jharkhand, Patratu STPP had around five days of coal stock and has also been included in the supply plan. The immediate focus is on maintaining regular movement of coal through rail links so that plants with limited stocks do not face a disruption in generation.

Rajasthan, UP and Maharashtra Among States With Low Stocks
The low stock list covers plants across several states. In Rajasthan, Suratgarh had one day of stock, while Kota and several Chhabra units had two to four days. In Uttar Pradesh, Anpara-C was listed with one day, while several other plants had two to four days. Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also had plants with less than five days of stock. With many plants operating with limited reserves, sustained coal movement from producing regions will remain important to maintain generation, particularly at plants that depend on long-distance rail supplies.
