Hindalco Industries Ltd, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, commissioned India’s first Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) manufacturing plant at Belagavi in Karnataka. The greenfield facility has an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes and marked the company’s entry into domestic production of the specialty alumina product used in fire safety applications.
Plant to Meet Domestic Cable Industry Demand
The first phase of the facility has been designed to meet almost the entire domestic demand for PPT ATH from the wire and cable industry. Hindalco said the plant can be expanded to 60,000 tonnes a year in phases. PPT ATH is used in Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cables, the material helps limit flame spread and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases.

“The commissioning of our Superfine precipitated hydrate plant in Belagavi will further strengthen our leadership position, and enhance our high-value specialty alumina portfolio in India. This investment reflects Hindalco’s focus on creating value, moving up the value chain and delivering advanced solutions that meet the emerging needs of customers in India and global markets.” – Mr. Satish Pai, MD, Hindalco Industries
Demand Grew with Safety and EV Applications
The new facility comes as demand for halogen free fire protection materials has grown with stricter safety standards, infrastructure development and the rising use of electric vehicles. The Bureau of Indian Standards has also introduced IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables, in line with global safety benchmarks. Hindalco said its InnoSafe Superfine PPT ATH would support applications across electrical, infrastructure and mobility sectors while reducing India’s dependence on imports.

Plant Used In-House Technology and Renewable Power
The facility was developed through Hindalco’s in-house technology and R&D programme, with automated controls for key processes and an integrated manufacturing system for feedstock quality and product consistency. The Belagavi refinery, where the PPT ATH is produced, recorded a greenhouse gas intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina in FY26 year-to-date. The new facility uses 100% renewable energy from biomass, solar and wind sources.

The CEO, Specialty Alumina of Hindalco Industries, Saurabh Khedekar said that the addition of Superfine PPT ATH strengthens our Specialty Alumina portfolio and reinforces our focus on innovation-led growth. Our InnoSafe solution enhances fire safety by retarding flame spread and suppressing smoke, enabling safer and more sustainable infrastructure. As India’s first manufacturer of Superfine Precipitated Hydrate, we are proud to offer an indigenous, world-class solution that strengthens self-reliance, reduces import dependence and supports the evolving needs of the wire and cable industry.

Specialty Alumina Portfolio Expanded
Hindalco operates an integrated Specialty Alumina business with production capacity of about 800 kilotonnes a year and more than 120 grades of Specialty Alumina and Alumina Hydrates. The addition of Superfine PPT ATH takes the portfolio into advanced flame-retardant applications. The company said the new plant would strengthen domestic capability in a material that has a growing role in safer electrical and mobility systems, while supporting its wider move towards higher-value specialty products.
