Tatanagar railway station moved a step closer to becoming a major Vande Bharat hub after the Railway Board gave final approval for a Rs. 383.78 crore coach maintenance depot at the station. The project is aimed at expanding maintenance capacity for Vande Bharat trains and could make it easier for Railways to operate additional services from Tatanagar in the future.
The approved project will involve expansion of the existing coaching depot and construction of a modern maintenance yard in the Loco Colony area. The facility will have arrangements for technical inspection, routine maintenance and quick washing of Vande Bharat chair car and sleeper trains. The approval followed a technical proposal submitted by the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway and its subsequent review by the Railway Board.

MP Had Pursued the Project
Railway Board Project and Development Director Sumit Kumar communicated the approval to Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato. The MP had been pursuing the project for some time and met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railway Board directors and senior officials around four times during the recent Parliament session to seek clearance for the depot. The project is expected to add dedicated maintenance infrastructure to Tatanagar’s existing railway facilities.

More Vande Bharat Services Could Become Easier
Tatanagar currently has Vande Bharat services connecting it with Patna and Brahmapur. With additional maintenance infrastructure, the station will have greater capacity to handle Vande Bharat operations. This could support future plans to connect Tatanagar with other major cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Bengaluru, although the introduction of specific new services will depend on separate railway decisions.

Four More Platforms Also Proposed
With train traffic at Tatanagar increasing, MP Mahato has also submitted a Rs. 482 crore proposal under the PM Gati Shakti scheme for four additional platforms and loop lines at the station. The proposed works are intended to provide additional handling capacity as train operations expand. Mahato said the Vande Bharat depot project would also contribute to industrial and technical development in the region and create direct and indirect employment opportunities.
