Bokaro: The long list of unresolved employee demands at Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has once again brought workers and the management face to face. Employees continued their protest on Saturday, with the BSL Non-Executive Employees’ Union claiming that more than 100 demands remain pending, 45 at the SAIL corporate level and over 60 at the BSL level. The latest protest was organized outside the CRM-3 CGM office during the lunch break.

The protest is part of the union’s second phase of agitation. Employees from the morning shift gathered outside the CGM office during their lunch break and raised slogans in support of their pending demands. Union representatives alleged that the management had not acted on several issues despite repeated demands. The concerns include matters related to Wage Revision-2017, the bonus formula and issues pending before the National Joint Committee for Steel (NJCS). The union has also sought intervention from the Ministry of Steel in resolving employee related issues.
What Do the Employees Say?
Manik Munda, while addressing the gathering, said employees had played an important role in helping SAIL increase its production capacity. He referred to the company’s plans to raise production capacity from 21 million tonnes to 35 million tonnes and argued that pending employee issues should also be addressed alongside expansion plans. CRM-3 departmental representative Somesh Pandey said workers at the ground level had contributed significantly to BSL and SAIL’s production performance, but claimed that employees were yet to receive benefits commensurate with their contribution. These are the union’s assertions; the report does not include the management’s response to the allegations.
The agitation points to a familiar challenge in large public sector industrial units, balancing production targets with employee related settlements and service matters. For BSL workers, the immediate concern is not only individual demands but also unresolved issues involving wage revision, bonuses and collective bargaining. The protest was addressed by union general secretary Hariom, president Dilip Kumar, vice president Krishna Rajwar, treasurer Rahul Saw and other office bearers and executive members, who called for an early resolution of the pending demands.
