Bokaro: Contract workers employed across Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) units will receive a bonus equivalent to 8.33% of their annual basic wages before Durga Puja. The SAIL board has approved the payment, which is expected to benefit around 80,000 contract workers, including those working at Bokaro Steel Plant. The bonus will be credited directly to the bank accounts of eligible workers before the festival.

The bonus will be available to contract workers whose monthly wages are below Rs. 21,000. Payments will begin at SAIL’s Durgapur and IISCO Burnpur steel plants, followed by other major units including Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela, where payments are scheduled between 8th October tp 10th October 2026. SAIL’s contract labour cell and personnel departments will be asked to monitor the payment process to ensure that contractors make the payments properly. Contractors found committing financial irregularities in bonus payments may face departmental action.
Permanent Employees’ Bonus to Be Decided on 1st October 2026
The bonus payable to SAIL’s permanent and trainee employees has also been calculated ahead of the 1st October 2026 meeting in New Delhi. The calculation is based on the agreement reached between SAIL management and NJCS leaders in 2023 and the existing bonus formula, whose term is due to end this year. A proposal covering the number of employees and the bonus expenditure across SAIL, including BSL, has been prepared for discussion with union representatives.
Final Amount Expected After 1st October Meeting
Under the existing formula, permanent workers are expected to receive around Rs. 30,000 as bonus this year. However, the final amount could change depending on discussions between the management and unions at the 1st October 2026 meeting. The decision is expected to be taken by late evening on 1st October 2026, making the meeting important for SAIL’s permanent workforce ahead of the festive season.
