Bokaro: Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) recorded its best-ever first half production of hot metal, crude steel and finished steel during April-September 2026, with hot metal output reaching 10.2 million tonnes (MT), crude steel at 9.6 MT and finished steel at 8.39 MT. The company also posted its highest-ever September sales of saleable steel at 1.69 MT, as it continued to focus on plant efficiency, higher-value products and financial discipline.

The first-half hot metal production was 2% higher than the corresponding period last year, while crude steel and finished steel output increased by 1% each. The share of finished steel in total saleable steel production also rose from 86.8% in April-September 2025 to 89.2% in the same period this year. High-end steel production saw a sharper rise, increasing 30% to nearly 2 MT, the highest recorded by the company for the period.
Iron Ore Sales, Railway Supplies Rise
SAIL also reported a strong performance in iron ore operations, with production rising 13% and sales increasing 190% to 2.671 MT during the first half. Supplies of long rails to Indian Railways increased 7%, while wheels and axles rose 3%. The company’s specific energy consumption improved to 6.17 G.Cal/tcs, its best first-half performance, while fuel rate in September fell to 551 kg per tonne of hot metal.
September Sales Hit Record, Borrowings Decline
SAIL sold 1.69 MT of saleable steel in September, 4% more than the same month last year and the best September sales figure so far. Sales of branded SAIL SeQR TMT bars crossed 1.5 lakh tonnes, while structural products, plate mill plates and GP sheets/coils also recorded their best September sales. The company reduced inventory by around 0.145 MT and borrowings by about Rs. 1,080 crore during the first half. SAIL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. AK Panda said the performance reflected the workforce’s focus on efficiency, innovation and sustainable growth, and would place the company in a stronger position for the remaining months of FY27.
