Jamshedpur: Around five to six armed men robbed a Canara Bank branch in the Golmuri area of Jamshedpur on Thursday morning, taking away more than Rs 42 lakh in cash and a large quantity of gold jewellery. The incident took place around 9.15am, shortly after the bank opened, while cleaning work was underway on the premises.

According to the bank guard, Santosh Kumar, the robbers entered wearing raincoats, apparently using them to conceal their faces. They took the bank employees hostage at gunpoint and assaulted the guard with the butt of a firearm when he tried to resist. The men then went to manager Ajit Kumar’s chamber, held him at gunpoint and forced him to open the bank chest, from where they looted the cash. They also looted Gold Jewellery kept in the locker.

The robbers fled on two motorcycles after the robbery. Soon after the incident, Rural SP, DSP and teams from several police stations reached the branch and started an investigation. Police are checking CCTV footage from inside and around the bank to establish the identity and movements of the suspects, while checking operations are being carried out in the area to trace the fleeing accused.
