Dhanbad: IIT-ISM Dhanbad’s work in indigenous semiconductor research and chip design received national recognition at Semicon India 2026, with its locally designed chip showcased and honoured during the chip handover ceremony in New Delhi on Thursday. The institute was among six IITs and 20 leading institutions whose chip technologies were displayed at the event.

The chip was developed by a team of students and research scholars led by Prof Rajeev Kumar Ranjan, Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering. Research scholar Rahul Ranjan represented IIT-ISM at the ceremony and received the chip and a memento from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The handover ceremony was held as part of the Semicon India 2026 inaugural programme.
The chip was developed under the Ultra-Low Power Assistive Smart Glass project funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It was manufactured at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali. The project seeks to develop compact, low-energy technology for smart glasses, with the chip serving as an indigenous effort in semiconductor research and chip design.

Designed for Real-Time Image Processing
The digital Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) was designed for real-time image processing using an OV7670 camera. Besides smart glasses, the technology can potentially be used in biomedical imaging, assistive healthcare devices, wearable sensing and edge artificial intelligence systems. Prof Rajeev Kumar Ranjan said the recognition at Semicon India would encourage young researchers to pursue new applications in semiconductor design and contribute to India’s efforts towards indigenous chip technology and manufacturing.
Live Screening Held at IIT-ISM Campus
The opening ceremony of Semicon India 2026 and the chip handover programme were screened live at the Penman Auditorium of IIT-ISM Dhanbad. Director Prof Sukumar Mishra, Registrar Prabodh Pandey, Dean of Students Welfare Prof Sanjay Mandal, Associate Dean (Student Well Being) Prof Sanjeev Anand Sahu, Prof Rajeev Kumar Ranjan, faculty members, officials and students attended the programme.
