Bokaro: DVC and Coal India Limited has moved ahead with its plan to set up a 1,600 MW thermal power plant at the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station complex in Bokaro. The project will comprise two Ultra-supercritical units of 800 MW each and is being developed as a brownfield expansion within the existing Chandrapura plant premises. Under the agreement, L&T will undertake the design, manufacture, supply and installation of major equipment, including the boiler, steam turbine, generator and electrostatic precipitator. The package also covers commissioning-related work for the main plant.

Ultra-Supercritical Technology to Be Used

The new units will use Ultra-supercritical technology, which operates at higher steam temperatures and pressures than conventional thermal power plants. The technology is intended to improve fuel-use efficiency and reduce emissions per unit of electricity generated. The project will, however, have to complete the required approvals and conditions, including environmental clearance, before construction activities move to the next stage.

CCL to Supply Coal, Operation Targeted for FY32

The project is part of the earlier DVC-CIL joint venture plan to add new generation capacity using existing infrastructure at Chandrapura. Coal supply has been proposed from Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), a Jharkhand based subsidiary of Coal India. The new capacity is expected to add to the power generation base of Jharkhand and the surrounding region, with commercial operation targeted for FY 2031-32.
